White Lotus (2009)

White Lotus consists of thirteen Glade® Sense & Spray® Automatic Fresheners — commercial motion-activated devices that detect when someone passes by and instantly release a burst of fragrance into the air. Installed as a group, the fresheners form a passive environmental system activated solely by human presence.

The work repurposes mass-market scent dispensers designed for domestic freshness and environmental control, introducing an artificial, commercial sensory element into the space of the artwork. The title evokes the white lotus as a symbol of purity rising from mud, set against the chemical, triggered nature of the devices themselves.
